Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac. It governs the period from June 22nd to July 22nd when the Sun moves through this constellation. It is symbolized by a crab or crayfish.

It has the brightest star Al Tarf and the famous star by name Praesepe or the Beehive. The constellation was first described by Ptolemy. This constellation can be seen at latitudes between +90° and -60° and is best visible during the month of March.
The Delta Cancrids are the only meteor shower associated with the constellation of Cancer.
The crab is the symbol of the zodiac sign of Cancer. The crab is a crustacean that retracts to its shell when it senses danger.
This is related to the crab in Greek mythology that pinched Heracles while he was fighting the Lernaean hydra. Crushed by Heracles, the crab was rewarded by Heracles’ enemy, Hera, by being placed in the heavens.
The crab carries its shell or its home around always. Similarly the Cancers are greatly attached to their family and home and hence the symbolic association.
The glyph of the zodiac sign consists of two crescents oriented in opposite directions and each carrying at opposite ends and towards the interior, a circle. This is indicative of the clamps of the Crab. This also indicates the openness and the emotional nature of the Cancerians.
The age of Cancer extended between 8000 B.C. – 6500 B.C. It is believed that the great floods occurred during this period. The worship of the Sun ceased and Moon worship started as people believed that the Moon controlled the waters.
During this age, the matriarchal system was prevalent. Animals were started to be domesticated and reared. This age is also the Neolithic age or the late stone age. Females were reverred as they were thought to be the only one involved in procreation. According to them, Mother possessed all powers.

In Mesopotamia, This sign is said to have been the place for the Akkadian Sun of the south, when the summer solstice position was in Cancer. Later on it was considered as the northern gate of the Sun.
Historic records found in Egyptian tombs find mention of crab or a cray fish sort of crustacean being implicated as a sign for births and deaths.
